Beautiful People is a blog linkup to help writers develop their characters hosted by Cait and Sky. This edition has come at a perfect time, as I’m currently starting to draft a story told from the perspective of two best friends. In my last Beautiful People post, I interviewed Hunter Wright. Now you get to meet his best friend, Sydney Parks. Yay!
Also, just a side note, I’m breaking from my regular interview style, because interviewing two characters at once could get really long-winded and off track.
How long have they known each other, and how close are they?
Hunter and Sydney have known each other since kindergarten, and were pretty much instant best friends in typical kindergarten fashion. As they grew up they kind of adopted each other as brothers (more on that later).
2. What’s their earliest memory of being best friends?
Hunter was a loud, hyperactive kid back in kindergarten, and the teacher thought that sitting him beside Sydney, who was so shy she had yet to hear him speak, would help him focus in class. At first Sydney was terrified of the prospect of sitting beside Hunter, but Hunter being Hunter he refused to pass up the opportunity to make a new friend. They soon discovered a mutual love of their world’s equivalent to Pokemon, and their friendship grew from there.
3. Do they fight? How long do they typically fight for?
They have almost opposite personalities, so they rub each other the wrong way pretty often. Fortunately, they are also both quick to forgive each other, so they never end up fighting for very long. The longest was probably three days when Hunter accidentally broke Sydney’s science fair project the day before it was due.
4. Are their personalities similar or do they compliment each other?
Definitely complement each other. Hunter is loud, friendly, athletic, and ‘cool’ whereas Sydney is more quiet, antisocial, and a total science nerd.
5. Who is the leader of their friendship (if anyone)?
Hunter tends to lead in the friendship, but Sydney will definitely take charge when he feels strongly about something.
6. Do have any secrets from each other?
Just spoiler-y ones. 😉
7. How well do they know each other’s quirks and habits?
Having pretty much grown up together, they know each other’s quirks very well.
8. What kind of things do they like to do together?
They used to play video games together a lot when they were younger. Nowadays ‘not dying’ is usually at the top of the favourite hang-out activities list.
9. Describe each character’s fashion style (use pictures if you’d like!) How are their styles different/similar?
Sydney can generally be found in jeans and a t-shirt (preferably with an obscure math joke 99% of the population wouldn’t get) and a pair of black hi-tops.
Hunter generally goes for dark-wash jeans, a solid-colour t-shirt, a black leather jacket, and red swede or basketball shoes.
10. How would their lives be different without each other?
Well for starters they would both be dead without each other, as they save each other’s butts a lot during the course of the novel. Aside from that obvious one, Sydney would be a very sad and lonely science nerd without Hunter, and Hunter would probably end up doing a lot of stupid stuff if Sydney wasn’t around to ground him.
That’s all the questions, so that’s all for this post. Hope you enjoyed reading a little more about Hunter and Sydney.
Oh, and who’re your favourite fictional best-friend pair? Tell me below in the comments!

Aww they are so cute, love how they complement each other. I always enjoy boy/girl friendships. Saving each others lives is a great way to cement a friendship 😀
I would have to say Frodo and Sam, there loyalty to each other is amazing.

Hehe awks Sydney and Hunter are both boys… I forgot that Sydney is a gender ambiguous name – I’ll have to make sure I make that clear in my rough draft of the book. Thanks for pointing it out to me! You just saved me a lot of hair-pulling editing work!
Frost and Sam are the best best friends ever! They’re definitely at the top of my favourite friends list, too. XD

I think that would have to be the two main characters of Code Name Verity….. if you have not read that book you really should!

OOH I love the Beautiful People posts that everyone does, they’re so interesting to read, and your two characters sound really intriguing! My favourite two friend characters…probably Karou and Zuzana from the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, have you read it? It’s one of my favourite series.
Thanks for stopping by my blog, I love yours too!

Thanks! 😀 I’ve only read the first book in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, and haven’t continued with it because there were so many other shiny books begging to be read. That said, Karou is pretty awesome. 🙂

Heheh, spoilery secrets, you say? *rubs hands* Wonder what they could be…
Number 8’s “not dying” cracked me up. XD
Sydney sounds like just the person to balance Hunter out a little. 😉 It’s always fun when fictional besties are so vastly different. Lots of opportunity for friction!
As for a favorite pair, well…depends in what way. Billy and Bonnie of Dragons in Our Midst are inspiring, Will and Horace in Ranger’s Apprentice are hilarious, and I know there are many more I like. They’re just hiding in my brain for the moment. XD

Thanks, Tracey! Hehe so many spoilery secrets! I’m ashamed to say I still haven’t read Dragons in our Midst OR Ranger’s Apprentice. 😕 I really need to fix that, one of these days.

Yes, time is always at a premium, especially during school. Do math instead of read books? Ain’t nobody got time for that! 😛

Congratulations on another great post! I think these dudes are going to get into a lot of trouble together. Do they have super-powers to help them get out of trouble? Or a friend who’s a wizard or something like that?

Hehe thanks! They do get in to a lot of trouble, but you know me – at least one of them has a super power to get them out again. ;P
